My plate will almost always contain a Beef Patty Melt if it’s on the menu. Between two pieces of pan-grilled rye toast are a soft, juicy beef patty, caramelized onions, cheese, and dressing.

Ground beef, onions, and cheese are just a few basic things you’ll need to make this diner staple(Beef Patty Melt) at home!

A Simple Classic

Everyone enjoys a juicy, sloppy burger. The best patty melt is loaded with all the delicious stuff, but depending on where you live, you can make patty melts with various types of cheese, on various types of bread, and with a fantastic patty melt sauce (thousand island dressing)!

A Patty Melt is what, then? It resembles a melted grilled cheese sandwich and a juicy burger almost exactly. In actuality, the only distinction between a patty melt and a burger is the bread’s grilling. They were created in the 1940s, and nearly every restaurant has added its own touch.

Using high-quality products is essential because a patty melt recipe is straightforward and doesn’t call for many components.

  • Quality rye or sourdough bread can withstand a juicy hamburger patty, cheese, and onions.
  • Caramelized onions are a flavorful addition that shouldn’t be missed. For recipes like this one and for homemade French onion soup, I prepare large batches in my crockpot and freeze them.
  • Meat: You want lean beef, but not excessively so (80/20 is ideal). A small amount of fat gives it a wonderful flavor, keeps it juicy, and works wonders in the pan when grilling bread.
  • Swiss, cheddar, or American cheese are excellent selections for a burger melt, but really any cheese will do! Include your favorite or layer several for more flavor!

The options are endless in terms of additions. Sauteed mushrooms with garlic, pickles, sauerkraut, and grainy mustard for dipping. Be imaginative!

Creating a Beef Patty Melt

Although it takes some time, making a patty melt is very simple. This sandwich’s flavor is greatly enhanced by the caramelized onions, so taking the extra time is worthwhile.

  1. In a sizable frying pan, combine 2 tablespoons of butter and chopped onions. For about 20 to 25 minutes, cook onions over low heat until they are golden. Prepare the remaining ingredients in the meantime.
  2. Add salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to the beef. Divide into 4 patties with shapes resembling bread.
  3. Heat a pan with 1 tablespoon butter over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, depending on how done you like them.
  4. Butter the bread slices on both sides lightly. Place the buttered side of the bread in a skillet or on a griddle.
  5. Include mustard and dressing. Add cheese, onions, then the beef patty on top.
  6. Place the second slice of bread on top and broil it until it is hot, melted, and the bread is just barely browned on each side.
