A legendary side dish is the Waldorf Salad. The Waldorf Salad was invented in 1896 by the manager of the dining room of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, and since then, it has graced dining rooms all over the world.

While a typical Waldorf salad includes apples, celery, grapes, and mayonnaise, this recipe omits mayonnaise and instead uses a few festive ingredients to lighten it up a touch.

Yogurt and Apple Waldorf Salad

I adore this apple Waldorf salad because it has so many different flavors and textures, including sour cranberries, sweet yogurt, juicy grapes, and crunchy celery.

To temper the cranberries’ acidity, yogurt is used in place of mayonnaise in the Waldorf salad dressing. My kids are content to eat this dish as a dessert or for breakfast thanks to the yogurt!

This side salad has a wonderful fall flavor thanks to the addition of apples and a mixture of fresh and dried cranberries. I zest the orange with a long Microplane-style zester.

Make sure you only take the very outside orange skin and not any of the inner white pith (the pith is bitter). More information on zesting fruit can be found here. Fresh cranberries and zest on top of the cranberry Waldorf salad

Turkey and Waldorf Salad are a Perfect Match!

All year long, you can enjoy this salad as a side dish to a turkey supper, in my opinion!

The meal is a terrific fruity alternative for family gatherings because it is sweet, fresh, and crisp. You can’t go wrong serving a batch of this Cranberry Waldorf Salad for a picnic or Thanksgiving dinner.
