Why This Simple Apple Pie Recipe Is Popular?

Many of my creations, like baked pie bread and pie roll-ups, have been influenced by pie, but nothing compares to the ideal traditional pie recipe.

  • It really is as simple as pie. The following advice makes sure the pie is always delicious.
  • It is easy to make and doesn’t require any fancy ingredients.
  • Apples with a perfect amount of sweetness and a delicate crust.
  • Works flawlessly with handmade or store-bought pie crust.

Top Apples for Pie

Firm apples that are sweet, somewhat tangy, and sweet are ideal for pies.

They should be soft enough to become tender when cooked while yet being firm enough to prevent the apple slices from totally disintegrating while the pie is baking. Here are some of our top picks for pie!

Making An Apple Pie

Start with a double pie crust if you want to make a traditional pie recipe.

Peel, core, and finely slice apples to prepare the pie filling. They are sliced between 1/4″ and 1/8″ thick.
Make the filling by combining all the ingredients for the pie (per the recipe below).

The inclusion of all-purpose flour in this pie filling helps to absorb the juices that the apples leak during baking and gives the pie a little saucy texture.

Roll pie crust: If you created your own pie crust, roll it to a thickness of 1/8″ (I roll mine to the bottom of the pie plate, which is about 12 inches). Place aside.

Fill and Bake: Place the apple filling in the bottom of the crust, cover with a second crust (or a lattice crust), and bake.

How to Make the Perfect Pie?

  • Peel the apples first since baked apple peeling can be crunchy.
  • You don’t have to bother about adding tapioca or other thickening agents, unlike strawberry rhubarb pie or blueberry pie. Apples don’t produce nearly as much juice as berries.
  • Use a lattice crust or a whole top crust. If using a whole crust, make sure to slit the crust with a sharp knife a few times to let the steam out.
  • The crust will become glossy with an egg wash, and I frequently sprinkle some sugar on top as well.
  • For a crumb pie, the top crust can be swapped out for a crumble.

The Best Way to Make Apple Pie?

  • Beginning the pie’s baking process at a higher temperature prevents the crust from becoming mushy.
  • Depending on the quality of your apples, the pie may occasionally bubble over the rim of the baking pan. To prevent a mess in my oven, put it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Pie baking instructions: Bake homemade pie at 425°F for 15 minutes, then lower the heat to 375°F for an additional 35–40 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the pie crust is golden.
  • A Perfect Crust: Cover the edges with foil or a pie crust shield if the outer crust begins to brown too much.

Steps for Freezing Apple Pie

This pie can be frozen before or after baking, just like other pies. Freeze after wrapping in plastic wrap.

Turn on the oven to 425°F and bake something from frozen. The pie should be baked for 20 minutes on a baking sheet with a rim.

Bake for an additional 40 to 55 minutes, or until the crust is brown and the apples are softened, after lowering the heat to 375°F. Cover the top loosely with foil if it starts to brown too much.

After baking, if freezing, let the pie thaw overnight in the refrigerator. In the oven, it may be warmed up gradually.

Keeping Remainders

Before serving, let the pie cool slightly. This also guarantees that your pie won’t be too wet. Enjoy it when it’s still warm with ice cream!

For up to two days, leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator or on the counter.

Ingredients

crust

  • Double Crust Pie Pastry
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1-2 teaspoons coarse sugar

filling

  • 6-7 cups of apples peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  •  teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Set the oven to 425 °F.
  2. Apples should be peeled and quartered. Apples should be cored and sliced between 14 and 180-inch thick.
  3. All the filling components should be combined and well mixed in a big bowl. Place aside.
  4. A 12-inch circle is formed by rolling out half of the dough. The pastry dough should be used to line a 9-inch pie pan. Put the apple filling inside.
  5. Over the apple mixture, roll up the remaining crust and gently arrange it. Gently pressing the top and bottom crusts together will seal the edges. By crimping or pushing with a fork, you can fold or embellish the edges. Eliminate any extra dough.
  6. Mix the egg with two teaspoons of milk or water. To let steam out, make four to five slits on the top crust. Sprinkle sugar over the egg mixture after brushing.
  7. The pie plate should be placed on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Although optional, this will collect any spills or drips.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then lower the temperature to 375°F and continue baking for an additional 35 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the apples are soft.
  9. At least 30 minutes should pass before serving. If preferred, top warm dishes with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Bake on a pan lined with paper to catch any spillage for simple cleanup.
  • Use a pie crust shield or tent with foil to cover the crust if it begins to brown too much.
  • You may freeze the pie both before and after baking. Freeze for up to six months after wrapping in plastic.

Bake for 20 minutes on a rimmed baking sheet in a preheated oven (425°F) if baking from frozen. Bake for an additional 40 to 55 minutes, or until the crust is brown and the apples are softened, after lowering the temperature to 375°F.
