HOW DO YOU EAT OATS OVERNIGHT?

When I share an overnight oats recipe, this is the most common question I get.

And the answer is that there aren’t any! Overnight oats can be eaten cold, warmed in the microwave, eaten plain, or dressed up with a variety of toppings. It’s entirely up to you to decide. Soaking the oats overnight virtually eliminates the need for “cooking.”

WHICH OATS SHOULD I USE FOR OVERNIGHT OATS?

In my opinion, the best sort of oats to use for overnight oats are old-fashioned rolled oats. They soften rapidly but retain a lot of texture, preventing the mixture from becoming too gloopy.

Because instant oats lose their texture after being soaked, your overnight oats will be mushy and gluey. Steel-cut oats take longer to soak and may require extra liquid.

ADDING TOPPINGS OR NOT ADDRESSING TOPPINGS

When I have a particularly hectic morning, I simply grab a jar of overnight oats and dig in. If I have a little more time on my hands, I like to browse in my pantry for something interesting to put on top. Here are some creative toppings for overnight oats:

  • Nut or seed butter
  • Sliced bananas
  • Coconut
  • Walnuts, pecans, or almonds
  • Fresh berries
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF OVERNIGHT OATS?

Overnight oats keep for approximately 4-5 days in the fridge, so I always make batches of 4 servings to give myself a little wriggle room.

DO YOU HATE CHIA SEEDS? NO PROBLEM AT ALL

I added chia seeds to my overnight oats because I like the added fiber, but I know some people don’t like the gooey texture that chia seeds may produce.

You can just leave out the chia seeds if you don’t like them. The overnight oats will not be as thick, but they will taste just as good!

  1. 1 1/3 cup rolled oats, 2 tbsp. chia seeds (optional), 2 tbsp. cocoa powder, 2 tbsp. brown sugar, 1/4 cup micro chocolate chips, and 1/4 tsp salt in a mixing dish 1/2 tsp vanilla essence, and 1 1/3 cup milk (whatever type of milk you prefer)
  2. Combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl and set aside for five minutes. When you split the mixture into containers, the mixture will thicken slightly, making it easier to attain an equal ratio of solid to liquid.
  3. Divide the ingredients into four containers (each about 3/4 cup). Refrigerate the containers overnight.
  4. The mixture will be significantly thicker after overnight soaking.
  5. Just before serving, stir the oats to redistribute the cocoa powder evenly. Then savor the chocolatey delicacy!
