Early Life of, Sara Colquhoun
Sara Colquhoun, an Australian native, began doing Pilates when she was 14 years old. Wow, what is this, she exclaimed as she walked into the Pilates studio for the first time.
When Sara started doing Pilates, it wasn’t a particularly popular exercise, so everything seemed foreign to her.
But after just one training session, she had a completely different perspective. Sara claims, “I fell in love with the feeling that Pilates provided me right away.”
After an hour-long Pilates lesson, Sara experienced a sense of calm and stress reduction beyond anything she had ever experienced. She became “hooked” on training as a result.
Becoming A Teacher, Pilates
Sara told her mother she would one day become a Pilates teacher after her first week of Pilates instruction. She had no idea how quickly this day would arrive.
Sara obtained her certificate in Pilates instruction at the age of 17. She relocated to Melbourne, Australia, to pursue dance and jobs as a Pilates instructor a year later.
An Extreme Injury, Dancing
Even though Sara enjoyed practicing both dance and Pilates, she needed to dedicate 5-7 hours per day to each discipline. This quickly started to have an impact.
She was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy during her first year of dance, which rendered the left side of her face immobilized. This turned chronic and persisted for several months.
Sara’s Bells Palsy made dancing challenging for her. For her, simple tasks like standing up straight without toppling over became challenging.
“My eye was paralyzed open, and I had always to wear a terrible patch!” Even though I looked rather unusual, it was enjoyable to try to kick the room in a straight line. Most days, I was able to laugh at myself.
Pilates As Opposed To Dance, Strength, Flexibility,
Due to her illness, Sara found it challenging to dance, but she was still able to perform most of her Pilates exercises.
Because of this, she could still maintain her strength, flexibility, and coordination despite the setback. More importantly, Sara found that doing Pilates exercises relieved the tension and stress she was experiencing as she recovered from her ailment.
During this time of recuperation, Sara came to understand how much she cherished working out. Sara also gave up dancing once she had fully recovered from her ailment to devote herself fully to Pilates.
“I noticed that I was naturally drawn to teaching Pilates rather than dance. This came as such a shock to me and was occasionally difficult to accept. I never imagined that my love for Pilates would have supplanted my desire to become a dancer, but it did.
