Applesauce cooked from scratch is a fall classic! It’s the ideal time to try this really simple dish because it has only 4 ingredients and there are so many apples available!
Applesauce is a beloved snack or even dessert, whether it is sweetened or unsweetened. This recipe can be divided into sauce pouches or used as a flavoring ingredient in delectable banana morning cookies or muffins of carrot cake!
Apples That Make the Best Applesauce
For apple pie, we use hard apples, but any apple would work well in our homemade sauce recipe. Try Granny Smith, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Jonagold, and Fujis, among others.
An apple with greater sweetness will produce a sweeter sauce, whereas an apple with higher acidity (such as a Granny Smith) will produce a more acidic sauce. If more sweetener is required, add it! Try a variety or blend of your favorite foods.
Creating Applesauce
With only 4 ingredients, making sauce is incredibly simple.
- Making Apples: Chop, peel, and core the apples (per the recipe below).
- Simmer: You may also use a crockpot on low for about 3 hours to cook the apples and the remaining ingredients in a big pot until the apples are mushy.
- Apples should be thoroughly mashed to achieve the proper consistency.
Chunky or smooth apple sauce
Use a potato masher to generate a chunkier consistency, or a food processor or immersion blender to get a smoother apple sauce. Regardless of your preferences, this meal is wonderful!
How to Store Applesauce Made at Home
If it is stored in the refrigerator in a properly sealed container, the homemade sauce will keep for approximately a week or ten days.
Seal in these lovely reusable sauce pouches, or snack-sized freezer bags for kids, and squeeze out from one corner to make a quick snack!
Can Applesauce Be Freeze?
Yes, you can! When it thaws, it will be a little bit looser, which is ideal for muffins and smoothies. Just be sure to mark the container or freezer bag it’s in.
If you want to change up the flavor, sprinkle some cinnamon on top!
Serve as a dessert, side dish, or snack. It tastes excellent on top of vanilla ice cream or yogurt.

- ⅓ cup water
- 2-4 tablespoons sugar* or to taste
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine all the ingredients and bring them to a boil. Cover and lower the heat to a gentle simmer.
- Cook the apples for 15 to 20 minutes, or until very soft. To thicken, remove the lid and simmer for a further five minutes.

- If you want a chunkier consistency, smash the apples with a potato masher; if you want a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender.
