Your Thanksgiving ham will taste great with a brown sugar glaze. Orange juice, dijon mustard, and some spicy spices are added to a mixture of brown sugar and honey to give it a taste.
At the end of cooking, simply brush the ham with the glaze that has been simmered until thick.
Garnish for Ham
Although it is not necessary to glaze a ham, it gives a beautiful richness to the outside while keeping the ham juicy and soft inside.
To let the fluids penetrate the flesh a little bit, we score the ham (plus it gives a pretty presentation).
Use this glaze on the following things:
- Slow Cooker Ham
- Roasted Ham
- Spinning Ham
- Steaks of ham
- Honey Baked Ham knockoff
Variations and Ingredients
Making ham glaze is quite simple. This glaze’s ingredients are as follows:
Sugar and Honey, brown These serve as the glaze’s foundation and caramelize to produce a rich, gooey, and tasty glaze.
Mustard de Dijon For a little kick, I like to use dijon or grainy mustard. Alternatively, you can use a little bit of apple cider vinegar if you don’t have these items on hand.
In this dish, orange or pineapple juice complements the smoky flavor of the ham beautifully.
Hot Spices I mix in with ginger and cinnamon. Spices for pumpkin or apple pies can be substituted. Allspice, nutmeg, and clove (be conservative) are all suitable warm spices. Additionally great in this glaze is rosemary!
Brown Sugar Glaze Recipe
Put all the ingredients in a pot and stir.
- Bring to a simmer and then turn down the heat. Allow it to simmer for 15 minutes at a low temperature, or until black and just barely thickened. (Mixture will become thicker when standing.)
- After cooling for at least 20 minutes, glaze the ham. This enables the liquid to thicken, improving the ham’s coating.
Keep in mind that the sugars are at an EXTREMELY high temperature as the brown sugar glaze boils and almost turns into candy. Be careful if you have little children or pets around because it is incredibly hot.
A Ham’s Glazing Season
Oven In the final 20 to 30 minutes of cooking, glaze the ham. Over that time, glazing might cause the glaze to burn.
Slow Cooker The glaze for slow cooker ham can be added close to the beginning of cooking together with a little amount of liquid (broth or juice).
The slow cooker’s wet environment prevents the glaze from burning. I don’t typically cook the glaze ahead of time when preparing ham in a slow cooker. Simply combine them together and apply a thin layer to the ham.
I try to make sure a tiny bit gets between the borders of the layers if the ham is spiral cut.
