Why Is This Recipe So Delicious?

  • This keto ketchup recipe makes it simple to incorporate your favorite condiment into your meal without causing blood sugar to spike. Traditional ketchup may not appear to be a major concern — after all, you only use a small amount at a time, right? However, if you’ve ever read the label, you’ll notice that it’s packed with added sugar, and that “little at a time” can easily add up to more than you realize. With this homemade version, you won’t have to worry about your sugar intake for whatever reason.
  • You’d never guess it’s keto because it tastes exactly like store-bought ketchup. The brown “sugar,” in my opinion, makes all the difference. It provides a special touch and elevates this ketchup to new heights!
  • This recipe just requires a few ingredients, and you can change them as needed to make ketchup that suits your preferences. Do you like sweeter ketchup? More brown “sugar” is added. Do you adore paprika? Double up if you want to!

Important Ingredients

Brown “Sugar” — Because ketchup is both sour and sweet, we’ll need some form of sweetener in our keto ketchup. Brown “sugar” imparts a deep, rich flavor that is reminiscent to store-bought alternatives.

Any keto-friendly sweetener will work in its stead, so if you don’t have or can’t find sugar-free brown sugar, any non-sugar sweetener will suffice.

Tomato Paste — Tomato paste is the foundation of this keto ketchup, and sure, most canned tomato products aren’t keto-friendly.

Canned tomato products, like traditional ketchup, usually have a lot of added sugars or sugar substitutes, which might throw you out of ketosis.

The trick is to use a tomato paste with the fewest carbs and sugars possible. Any with added sugars or sugar substitutes should likewise be avoided. The only source of sugar in the paste should be the tomatoes.

Because this recipe makes about 18 servings, the quantity of sugar in a serving of keto ketchup is incredibly low – and substantially lower than a serving of store-bought ketchup.

Chef’s Advice

  • Because homemade keto ketchup has no preservatives, it cannot be stored at room temperature. You simply cannot. It will keep for up to 10 days if kept in an airtight container. If necessary, you can even freeze it!
  • You shouldn’t have this problem because you’re boiling and simmering, but If your sugar replacement has a gritty texture, run it through a food processor or coffee grinder first to transform it into a powdered sweetener before using it in ketchup.
  • Don’t rush through the procedure. The longer you let your keto ketchup simmer, the thicker it becomes, but the flavors deepen as well.
  • If you want less sweet ketchup, start with only 2 tablespoons of sugar-free brown sugar instead of 4. You may always taste it and add more if necessary, but you can’t take it away!
