When you want something sweet to go with roasted ham or savory herb roast turkey, turnip casserole is fantastic.
To bring out the sweetness of one of autumn’s best vegetables, mashed turnips are combined with applesauce and a touch of brown sugar in this simple dish.
This turnip dish, which has a streusel topping in the style of a blueberry buckle, may hold the key to persuading your children to eat their vegetables. They might even ask for seconds to surprise you!
Peeling a Turnip
Turnips are relatively difficult to peel when they are raw yet have thin skin and rather firm flesh. On the cutting board, though, they can be a little unsteady.
Cut off the top and bottom with a chef’s knife to prevent damage. Using the same knife or a smaller one, you can easily pare away the peel in strips so that you have a level base to work from.
A Turnip Casserole Recipe
You’ll like how easy turnip casserole requires so little preparation. As simple as 1, 2, 3!
- Mash and boil the turnips.
- Combine with the other ingredients and the applesauce.
- Add streusel on top and bake until bubbling and aromatic.
Turnips have a robust flavor that may stand alone, with a little seasoning or additional ingredients. However, you can still use your imagination to add other fall veggies that go well with this dish to make it more complex.
- Veggies: Consider adding some mashed cauliflower, Brussel sprouts that have already been cooked, or rutabagas. Parsnips are a nice addition as well since they give sweetness to balance the spicy, astringent turnips.
- For the topping, a dash of cinnamon wouldn’t be out of place. Additionally, any breadcrumbs you have will work to glue the components together.
Turnip Casserole’s shelf life
Turnip casserole is a simple dish to prepare ahead of time, making it ideal for Thanksgiving! Put the contents in a casserole dish and wrap the dish with plastic wrap securely to prepare ahead.
In the refrigerator, it can last up to four days. The streusel should be added right before baking.
The same method and amount of time can be used to keep leftovers in the refrigerator. Just make sure to store it in a zippered bag or another airtight container.

Can Turnip Casserole Be Freeze?
Turnip casserole that has been prepared ahead of time or leftover will stay fresh in the freezer for up to four months. It is not required to thaw leftovers before heating them in the oven.
Making in advance:
- Withhold the topping and freeze the casserole in the pan you’ll use to bake it later.
- Remove once it has firm and keeps in a freezer bag for up to four months.
- When it’s time to bake, put the hardened block back in the pan and thaw it in the microwave or refrigerator before covering it with streusel and baking it.
The future? Turnips can become your family’s favorite veggie thanks to this delicious casserole dish!
