Biography

Increasing Strength

Mike O’hearn, who was born in 1969, has enjoyed success in the modeling and fitness industries for more than 30 years. He has won four Mr. Universe titles in addition to four California Powerlifting, Strongman, and Judo titles.

He has been on more than 500 magazine covers and played the “Titan,” the team captain, in the American Gladiator. He serves as the team captain and spokesperson for Bodybuilding.com.

Mike began exercising as a result of his father being the main family influence. His mother was an artist, and his father played football and competed in bodybuilding. According to Mike, “she thinks you should constantly live your goal in this life.”

Mike was the youngest child in a huge family of 10, and because of this, his siblings would frequently tease him. His sisters and the rest of his family were either bodybuilders or powerlifters.

The family had to practice martial arts as well. As the youngest, Mike wanted to stand out in his family, so he worked hard to get fit and grow.

I was frequently the target because I was the youngest boy. So tell me, what the heck was I going to do if I didn’t start? But above all else, I’m just a huge silly man who adores his dogs and never fails to grin at a stranger.

Work In Charity

Mike is well-known not only in the fitness and sporting communities but also for his work with charities and the “Good Dog Aminal Rescue Center,” a Los Angeles-based organization that rescues dogs.

“I love helping lost dogs in whatever way I can, therefore this is my passion. I simply feel a connection with all animals, but especially dogs.

He is also well-known for his efforts with “Just Keep Livin,” through which he raises money and gives guest speeches to encourage individuals to accomplish goals they previously believed were impossible.

“It’s nice to be in a position where people look to you for guest speaking, and teaching the youth of today how I’ve succeeded in my career, stayed on a good path, and lived my dreams.

Training

Mike’s routines often consist of intense, powerful compound exercises because he was first exposed to powerlifting through his family.

He constantly makes sure to include exercises like the bench press, deadlift, and squats in his training. It’s all fairly traditional training, in a way. Lift a lot, and travel far.

He uses a tremendous amount of volume in his workouts, both in terms of reps and sets. For someone who has been lifting this method for more than 30 years, it may appear a little insane to a newbie, but he has become used to it.

Below is Mike’s recommended exercise that he outlined for the best possible body contouring. It is Mike’s 12-week regimen and includes all the ingredients for a powerful, bulky body.

  • Monday: Chest, Cardio, and Abs
  • Tuesday: Legs, Cardio, and Abs
  • Wednesday: Shoulders, Cardio, and Abs
  • Thursday: Arms, Cardio, and Abs
  • Friday: Back, Cardio, and Abs
  • Saturday: Off
  • Sunday: Off

Core Lifts: Incline, Squat, Deadlift

  • Weeks 1-4, 70%: 5 sets of 4 reps
  • Weeks 5-8, 80%: 5 sets of 3 reps
  • Week 9-12, 90%: 5 sets of 2 reps

Cardio:

  • Weeks 1-4, 30 minutes 4 days/week
  • Weeks 5-8, 45 minutes 5 days/week
  • Week 9-12, 1 hour 6 days/week

Nutrition

Mike O’Hearn follows his tried-and-true diet and stays in shape for most of the year. He consumes eight meals each day, the first four of which consist of 50g of carbohydrates and some fats along with 30g of protein.

He will next cut out the carbohydrates and include more veggies in the final four meals. “My diet is quite effective for me, but it might not be effective for others. Try different things; you’ll discover what works, is what I advise, says Mike.

Mike follows a pretty rigorous diet for the majority of the year, but when he’s off-season he loves to switch things up and indulge in indulgences to give his body a break.

“Your body will adjust to everything, so I don’t think you can be too anal. Your body doesn’t process nutrients the same way if you adhere to an excessively rigid diet all year long.

You must vary them, just like your workouts.” Mike’s best advice is to switch things up when you feel like it, both at the gym and with your nutrition.

“You must do the things you think you cannot do!”

Influences and Idols

His family, notably his father, who encouraged everyone to be in shape through martial arts and weightlifting, served as his key role models.

His mother also had a major impact on him; she was an artist herself and constantly pushed him to pursue his passions and live each day to the fullest.
